Law Enforcement Torch Run
"Freezin For A Reason"
Special Olympics is a forty year old non-profit organization committed to enriching the lives and improving the confidence of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In Broward County 800 special needs athletes participate in sixteen different sports year round. In 2008, Broward County Law Enforcement raised $75,000 through various activities.
One extremely successful event held throughout the United States is the polar plunge. Not to be dissuaded by our tropical climate, tons of ice will be added to a swimming pool to a temperature of 35 degrees, making this a memorable experience. Plungers are asked to donate a minimum of $25.00 for the cause. Awards will be given to the individual with the highest fundraising, the team with the highest fundraising, best costume, and largest team membership. Team competition is encouraged among local businesses & government, swim clubs, police, correction and fire academy classes.
This year’s proceeds will be shared with Coach Mike Lohberg’s Foundation to help offset his astronomical medical bills. Coach Lohberg is being treated at the National Institute of Health for a rare blood disease (Aplastic Anemia). U.S. Olympian Silver Medalist Dara Torres will be one of several celebrity athletes attending to support her swim coach, so bring your cameras.
This inaugural event will be Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Mullins Park Pool, 10000 N.W. 29 St, at the training pool that features a recessed beachfront entry. On-site registration begins at 8 A.M., the freezing fun at 10:00 A.M.
